Cosmetic Skin Rejuvenation
Cosmetic Skin Rejuvenation
Skin rejuvenation and resurfacing can be achieved in a number of ways, ranging from laser, light and other energy-based treatments to chemical peels and other non-ablative methods.Skin rejuvenation is a treatment to resurface your skin, or to improve the texture, clarity and overall appearance of your skin.
Conditions which can be treated include:
- Static Wrinkles: These wrinkles are visible at all times and do not change in appearance with facial movements
- Dynamic wrinkles: These are expression lines that may appear as folds when the skin is not moving, and deepen with facial movements or expressions
- Pigmentation: Freckles, sun spots, melasma, or other darkened patches of skin result mainly from sun exposure
- Scars: As the result of acne or injury to the skin, scars may be rolling (a wavy appearance to the skin), pitted, discolored, or have raised borders
- Vascular conditions: Blood vessels visible on the surface of the skin, vascular lesions that appear as tiny blood filled blisters or even a constant flush of facial redness
- Loss of skin tone: Weakening of the supportive skin structure (collagen and elastin fibers) that results in a loss of skin firmness, or the development of cellulite
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains (and releases through degranulation) several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue.
Blood-Derived Growth Factors
The internal essence of your blood contains life-giving fundamental protein growth factors. PRP utilizes a leading-edge patented technology specifically designed. With a simple, quick and advantageous process, your PRP professional is able to derived a high concentration of biological nutrient-rich cells and create autologous platelet-rich plasma.
- The practitioner draws a similar amount of blood required for a basic lab test.
- The practitioner places the blood into a centrifuge and spins the blood at a very rapid rate to separate the platelets from the other components of the blood
- The platelet- rich plasma is activated to release at least 8 essential growth factors and signaling proteins. Platelet-rich plasma is a technology that deploys aspects of blood based biochemistry. Because all constitutes retrieved in PRP are exclusively from the patient (autologous in origin), there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or intolerance. Nevertheless, before any treatment disclose all the medications you a retaking (including herbs) with your doctor.
Growth Factor Production Known Effects
Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)
Plays a significant role in the regulation of cell growth, proliferation, and different iation during the remodeling phase. Stimulates keratinocyte and fibroblast production.
Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)
Promotes angiogenesis which is the physiological process involving the growth of new blood vessels.
Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)
An important signaling protein involved in both vasculogenesis and angiogenesis, the growth of blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature.
Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF)
Promotes angiogenesis, granulation, and epithelialization for the intricate process of the skin repairing itself after injury.
Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)
Attracts macrophages and fibroblasts to the zone of injury. Promotes collagen growth and proteoglycan synthesis.
Interleukins, Macrophages, keratinocytes, endothelial cells, lymphocytes, fibroblasts, osteoblasts, basophils, mast cells
Activates fibroblast differentiation. Induces collagen and proteoglycan synthesis for healthy cell production and repair of damaged tissues.
Collagen Stimulating Growth Factor
Stimulates granulocyte and macrophage proliferation for the growth of healthy tissue and blood cells.
Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF)
Keratinocyte migration, differentiation, and proliferations directly enhance wound healing and the generation of new skin.
Dr. Michelson is now featuring a new procedure, introducing Micro-needling treatment!
What is automated Micro-Needling?
Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin's texture, tone and color. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin's repair process results in a thicker dermis with softer wr inkles.Eclipse MicroPen"' also creates micro channels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing their effects in deeper layers of the skin.
I look forward to every treatment because I see results immediately. All of my friends compliment me on my skin now and Iam so happy. Ihave had many other treatments before to treat my Acne scars, and nothing worked as well as the MicroPen . I would highly recommend it to anyone!
- Elizabeth K.
What are the benefits?
Wrinkle reduction, texture, tone improvement and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. New collagen production reverses years of sun damage. Eclipse MicroPenTM also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as treating uneven skin tone, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks.
What areas of the body can I treat?
Eclipse MicroPen™ can be used on all parts of the body; Face, neck, decollete, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.
How is the procedure done?
A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is at tached to the Eclipse MicroPen™. Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.
What does it feel like?
The feeling associated with the Eclipse MicroPen™ is similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip makes the treatment comfortable.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.
What is the downtime?
Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the depth of needles used and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, patients are red for 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours. Utilizing the Eclipse Dermal Recovery System™ post treatment will speed up the healing process.
When will I see the results?
Patients notice an immediate "glow" to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.
How many treatments will I need?
Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals.
Contour Thread Lift™
Contour Thread Lift™
As the aging process begins, the connective tissue thins and collagen and elastic fibers break down. These changes in the support structures appear as sagging skin, deep creases, folds, and wrinkles. Corrective procedures with Contour Threads™ are safe, conservative, minimally invasive, and effective, offering subtle, natural-looking results for:
- Lifting sagging eyebrows
- Adjusting asymmetric eyebrows
- Repositioning sagging cheeks
- Lifting drooping soft tissue of the mid and lower face and neck
- Enhancing poorly defined upper and mid face contours
- Smoothing out prematurely aging skin
By gently shifting sagging tissues in an upward direction, this technique allows Dr. Michelson to produce a relaxed, fresh appearance while preserving and enhancing the natural contours of your face. This procedure does not replace a conventional facelift. Rather, it offers patients an innovative, minimally invasive approach.
A Contour ThreadLift™ utilizes tiny, specially designed sutures fashioned from clear, non-absorbable polypropylene, a material that has been safely used for many years as a surgical component within the body. Unlike other thread products, Contour Threads™ are clear so they are not visible under fair or thin skin; they have tiny, evenly-spaced teeth-like (barb-like) cogs that, once inserted under the skin and tensioned, open in an umbrella-like fashion to form a support structure that gently lifts and repositions the tissues into a more youthful position.
During the time of your consultation with Dr. Michelson, you will see, demonstrated in the mirror, the relative amount of lift that the Contour ThreadLift™ can achieve. The procedure can also be combined with other techniques, including blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), peels and laser therapy (to improve skin texture), fat transfer or dermal fillers (to enhance volume), botulinum toxin (to reduce facial muscle activity), liposuction of the neck and lower jaw, and chin augmentation.
In general, the best candidates for a Contour ThreadLift™ include both women and men who prefer a dramatic and long lasting effect with a minimally invasive procedure. Patients should not be too heavy or too thin, be medically well, not be taking blood thinning medication, and have realistic expectations.
In most cases, only local anesthesia is required. Dr. Michelson may also offer you the option of having light sedation or twilight anesthesia, depending on the scope of the Contour ThreadLift™ you are having and the number of Contour Threads™ to be used in one stage. Dr. Michelson makes a tiny incision behind the hairline and, using a long needle, the threads are inserted in precise locations and are advanced along previously marked contours so their cogs create a firm hold on the underlying tissues and stationary fascia. Taking care to cause a minimum of trauma, the suture is tensioned, resulting in an immediate lifting effect. The needle is removed and the end of the thread is knotted and cut, allowing it to retract deep under the skin where it cannot be felt or seen. The surrounding tissues also act in the following weeks to hold the threads in place by generating new collagen bundles that surround each thread, helping to maintain the lifting effect.
Completion time usually takes thirty to sixty minutes-and patients can leave for home soon after the procedure. Pain and discomfort are very minimal with this technique and most patients require only non-prescription pain relievers. In most cases, ice compresses are recommended for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours. There are also some practical instructions and care that must be taken in the three-week period following the procedure. To avoid traumatizing or dislodging the threads from their supportive locations in the deep fat of the face and neck, it is important to:
- Avoid forceful facial rubbing, trauma, or putting pressure on the face
- Sleep on your back
- Refrain from making facial animations and opening your mouth wide.
Depending upon your job and your tolerance for some minor bruising and swelling, you may be able to return to work in two to three days following the procedure. Most patients look good in makeup after one week.
The Contour ThreadLift™ is a relatively simple procedure to perform. Complications are rare and will be less likely with your experienced, fully trained surgeon. Usually, only one session is needed to achieve the desired lifting effect.
The duration of your new appearance varies, depending upon your age at the time of the procedure, the degree of sagging, and the number of threads used. Additional threads may be added as needed. The lift effect of the Contour ThreadLift™ can last three to five years in some cases. Many physicians offer non-invasive outpatient treatments that enhance or protect the effect. These adjunctive procedures include botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, laser and light therapy, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. Developed by a board certified plastic surgeon, the unique design of Contour Threads™ allows a traditional facelift or browlift procedure when you are ready.

Understanding Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Understanding Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Probably no other physical characteristic cries out for facial plastic surgery more than protruding ears. Children, long the victims of cruel nicknames like “Dumbo” or “Mickey Mouse,” are the most likely candidates for otoplasty, but this surgery can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. Even if the ears are only mildly distorted, the condition can lead to self-consciousness and poor adaptation to school. It is often desirable in children to consider this surgery before they start Kindergarten or first grade
“My ears always stuck out, one more than the other. Growing up, I was very self-conscious. I never wore my hair in a pony tail. It was awful when I went swimming because when my hair got wet, my ears would stick through it. I hated the way they looked. Now that I’ve had surgery, I definitely feel better about my appearance.” – j o a n n e j . , a g e 4 3
Understanding the Surgery
Surgery begins with an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon will then remove the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect. In some cases, the surgeon will trim the cartilage, shaping it into a more desirable form and then pin the cartilage back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage.
In other instances, the surgeon will not remove any cartilage at all, using stitches to hold the cartilage permanently in place. After sculpting the cartilage to the desired shape, the surgeon will apply sutures to anchor the ear until healing occurs to hold the ear in the desired position.
A change in shape will not affect hearing. Although the ears’ folds and convolutions do serve to concentrate and localize sound waves, routine surgery to pin back or reshape ears will not produce a noticeable change in hearing. Ear surgery can offer a real emotional boost, in addition to its cosmetic benefits.
Soft dressings applied to the ears will remain for a few days. Most patients experience some mild discomfort. If you are accustomed to sleeping on your side, your sleep patterns may be disrupted for a week or so because you cannot put any pressure on the ear areas. Headbands are sometimes recommended to hold the ears in the desired position for two weeks after the surgery.
The risks are fairly minimal, but include very rare infections, poor healing or possibility of recurrence of the deformity. Normally, there will only be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Because this scar is in a natural crease behind the ear, the problem of visibility is inconsequential. Anything unusual should be reported to the surgeon immediately.
Facial plastic surgery makes it possible to correct many facial flaws that can often undermine one’s self-confidence. By changing how you look, cosmetic surgery can help change how you feel about yourself.
Insurance does not generally cover surgery that is purely for cosmetic reasons. Surgery to correct or improve birth defects or traumatic injuries may be reimbursable in whole or in part. It is the patient’s responsibility to check with the insurance carrier for information on the degree of coverage.
Endoscopy is a surgical technique that involves the use of an endoscope, a special viewing instrument that allows a surgeon to see images of the body's internal structures through very small incisions.
An endoscope consists of two basic parts: A tubular probe fitted with a tiny camera and bright light, which is inserted through a small incision; and a viewing screen, which magnifies the transmitted images of the body's internal structures. During surgery, the surgeon watches the screen while moving the tube of the endoscope through the surgical area.
It's important to understand that the endoscope functions as a viewing device only. To perform the surgery, a separate surgical instrument-such as a scalpel, scissors, or forceps-must be inserted through a different point of entry and manipulated within the tissue.
Although the traditional facelift operation is still the best choice for most patients - especially those with a significant amount of excess skin - certain selected individuals may benefit from an endoscopically assisted procedure. When an endoscope is used, the customary incision along, or in the hairline is usually eliminated. Instead, small incisions may be strategically placed in areas where the most correction is needed. If the muscles and skin of the mid-face need to be smoothed and tightened, incisions may be hidden in the lower eyelid and in the upper gumline. To tighten the loose muscles of the neck, incisions may be concealed beneath the chin and behind the ears. The endoscope may also assist in the positioning of cheek and chin implants.

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, corrects sagging or drooping eyelids, as well as bags and bulges around the eyes. These conditions develop as a result of laxness of the eyelid skin and accumulation of fat around the eyes. It is not limited to older patients, as many individuals inherit a predisposition toward development of fat pouches at an early age. Thus, surgical correction is appropriate for all age groups.
Following the natural lines of your eyelids, the surgeon makes incisions using a scalpel or laser (see Laser Treatments / Surgery). Excess skin can then be removed by traditional excision or by laser; nonessential fat is removed precisely (to avoid a future "hollowing" appearance as the patient increases in age). Very fine sutures are used to close the incisions (and can be removed in two to seven days).
Following surgery, to help speed their recovery, patients are asked to apply ice compresses during the first 24 to 48 hours, and antibiotic drops for a week. With the reduction of swelling, most patients are able to return to their normal activities in less than a week.
In some cases, abnormal eyelid conditions can be caused by other medical problems such as allergies or thyroid disorders. In these patients, the proper treatment may be medical rather than surgical.

Face & Neck Lift
Face & Neck Lift
FaceLift in Oxnard, or a rhytidectomy, is designed to restore a more youthful appearance by removing major wrinkles and sagging skin. Children and young adults have smooth, round faces due to evenly distributed fatty tissues in facial contours. As a result of aging, sun exposure and genetics, the facial skin may sag and wrinkle, and folds of the chin, jaw line and neck may become prominent. Facelift surgery helps to temporarily reverse this process by tightening the facial and neck muscles and removing any excess skin. A face lift is frequently performed in conjunction with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), a forehead lift, and chin augmentation (and/or liposuction) to create an overall rejuvenation of the face. A single session often achieves the desired results.
Facelifts are performed in outpatient surgical centers or in an accredited physician's office. Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation is most commonly used, with premedication to help you relax. General anesthesia is generally not required but can be used if desired. The surgeon will make incisions inside the hairline at the temple, in front of the ear, then around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending at the scalp area. Excess skin is removed and sagging muscles and connective tissues are tightened. In some cases, fatty deposits are removed from beneath the chin and neck. Incisions are closed with small sutures. The procedure may take up to five hours, depending on whether any additional procedures are included in the operation.
In the weeks following the surgery, the facial skin and area around the ear may be numb. There may also be some temporary discoloration as healing begins, which may take a few months to disappear. Occasionally, the facial nerve is bruised during surgery, resulting in temporary loss of function or sensation. Serious or permanent damage to the facial nerve is rare. The healing process is gradual, so you will not notice final results for up to six months. Most patients who have had facelifts are pleased with their new, more youthful appearance.
The muscles above and between the eyebrows contract and tighten, and can cause wrinkles. Dysport blocks the nerve signal that causes these facial muscles to contract. This ultimately results in a localized reduction of muscle activity in the treated area and temporarily stops the contraction of these muscles.
Cheek & Chin Implants
Cheek & Chin Implants
Cheek implants (malar augmentation) and chin implants (mentoplasty) modify the underlying structure of the face to produce a pleasing combination of facial elements. Using components of classic beauty, in this case prominent cheekbones and a strong chin projection, Dr. Michelson creates a countenance of balance and distinction.
The proportioning qualities of these procedures can benefit patients in many ways. Both can enhance a facelift, correct asymmetries and congenital defects, cheek implants can recontour sagging mid-facial tissues, and a chin implant can shorten the perceived length of the nose.
Cheek and chin implants are safe, and risk of patient allergic reactions is very low. Non-toxic materials include solid silicone, porous polyethylene, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, and all can be custom trimmed by Dr. Michelson.
Malar augmentation and mentoplasty each require thirty to sixty minutes to complete, and can be performed with local anesthesia combined with a sedative (with the patient awake). However, general anesthesia (with the patient asleep) may be recommended. For each implant, a small incision is made, usually inside the mouth (for mentoplasty, inside the mouth or underneath the chin); a pocket to receive the implant is surgically formed; a sterilized implant of the appropriate size and shape is placed in the pocket and secured; the incision is closed using tiny sutures. External sutures can be removed in five to seven days while intraoral sutures will dissolve in about ten days.
Following the procedures, some discomfort and aching can be expected, and can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Michelson. Swelling and some bruising occur, and usually subside within the first two weeks; during the first twenty-four hours, the swelling can be minimized by applying cold compresses while keeping the head elevated. After mentoplasty, an elastic dressing will be in place for a few days. For both procedures, instructions for temporary changes in oral hygiene and eating (a soft food diet) will be provided - the ability to move your mouth will be diminished right after the procedure, and chewing may be uncomfortable for a week to ten days.
Though it may be best to avoid smiling immediately after your surgery, it will be difficult not to smile when your recovery is complete. Your facial features in balance, you can emerge with self-confidence and distinction. We invite you to call today for your personal consultation
